Here's a nice little video tutorial on gesso resist - using Versamark ink, clear embossing powder plus two contrasting colours of dye ink and a magazine page.
I'd recommend a Crop-a-dile punch (lots easier than poking holes) and Rangers' Cut-n-Dry felt cut up into squares, to apply the ink with. The felt doesn't absorb the ink like sponge does (it just sits on the surface of the felt) so you aren't wasting half your ink when you apply it! Distress Inks, Versamagic and Brilliance inks would also work well.
This is also a great little video for beginners: showing how to ink a stamp, and simple matting and layering effects.
Enjoy!
